In 2023 I met with a company who have developed highly efficient solar technology that uses ambient background light to charge low-power products (see Low-Light Energy Harvesting Solar Cells for Connected Devices). Although the technology is unlikely to ever be able to power more energy hungry products the prospect of more electronic devices being self-perpetuating is awesome to me. No more charging cables. This project is a homage to that idea with a concept for an ambient light powered keyring LED made from moulded steel that can last 10+ years before the batteries need replacing. I look forward to seeing how far the technology gets. Current real-world applications include remote controls and other connected, smart home devices & E-ink display products.
